The Prospectus for Compiling the Dictionary delineates the concept of the dictionary, defines its type, substantiates the principles of forming the register, its interpretation and illustration, presents the basic principles of building dictionary entries for words of different parts of speech, lexical and grammatical categories and thematic groups, compiles a list of temporal, sectoral, stylistic and stylistic remarks, outlines the requirements for the source base of the dictionary and its main functions: information and reference, educational, historical and cultural. The trial workbook of the new explanatory dictionary included sample entries for different types of register units. These sample entries were the result of studying theoretical and practical problems related, in particular, to the presentation of the semantic structure of polysemous words, various word-formation and grammatical categories of vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, and variants of phrase combinations. The aforementioned corpus of the active-type explanatory dictionary, which has been compiled across four volumes, corresponds to a medium-sized dictionary with a register of 50-70 thousand entries according to the typological classification of explanatory dictionaries. The volume of this register, which the compilers of the new dictionary checked for activity in modern language practice using texts of various functional styles and spheres of use of the Ukrainian language, is approximately 300 thousand words. The new card index facilitated the identification of the development of the semantics and functional and pragmatic potential of the described linguistic units.
