The collected samples were analyzed for pH, redox-potential, granulometric composition, natural humidity, carbonate content and concentration of organic nitrogen, total phosphorus and several trace elements (zinc, cadmium and chromium are among them as obligatory elements). The data received were used for the pollution load indexes (PLI) calculation. The indexes allow estimating of ecological state of bottom sediments by using ten-point scale. Comparison of Sevastopol, Odessa and Batumi regions with different bays of Ireland, France and USA (the main task of MHI group in the project) has demonstrated that most of West-European bays can be estimated as polluted and highly polluted. On average the bottom sediments of Sevastopol bays are less polluted than sediments of West-European and Black Sea bays of other regions.
