The main purpose of the research consists in the complex and systematic analysis of the foreign language discourse within the framework of modern advances in pragmalinguistics, cognitive linguistics and text linguistics as well as in the synthesis of the obtained data with pedagogic theories of foreign laguage speaking skills development. The following methods are used: semantic and pragmatic discourse interpretation, conversation and text analysis, concept and speech act modelling, elements of qualitative and quantitative analyses. In the study the postulates about the place of a speech act in the cognitive and discourse paradigm are generalised; a solution to the problem of discourse implication from the position of the field approach is suggested; discourse characteristics of the hint speech act are revealed; the factor of the hearer in the context of strategic discource potential is studies; informative and contextual characteristcs of phatic metadiscourse are analysed; the role of the topic as a discourse-making constituent is clarified; the results of the research of the POWER concept verbalisation in modern British newspaper discource are presented; the regulatory potential of British proverbs as a means of linguistic embodyment of MAN and WOMAN concepts is studied; metaphoric and paradoxic represetations of the PERSON concept in German aphorisms are studied; the problems of standard of speech for the teacher's professional skills are outlined; conclusions about the pricipals of secondary language identity are made taking into consideration modern social tendencies; the meaning of translation within integrative approach is clarified.
