We investigated the lithosphere structure of the AP by combining deep seismic refraction studies with magnetic and gravity modelling. They are carried out along interpretation lines parallel to seismic profiles, yielded models of the crust and upper mantle structure. We erected new petrological model for the margin and revealed a heterogeneous structure in the upper mantle, which allowed us to draw the following conclusions: (1) The active margin segment of the northern AP is characterized by ongoing subduction beneath the South Shetlanf Trench and active continental rifting in the Bransfield Strait. Our modelling shows that the South Shetland Islands represent the exposed part of a huge crustal diapir, which is composed mostly of Cretaceous ultramafic rocks. (2) The passive margin segment of the northern AP is characterized by juxtaposition of thin oceanic crust of the Bellingshausen Sea and ca. 40-km-thick continental crust of the AP. The transition zone includes an uplifted crustal wedge that is interpreted by mafic intrusions assigned to the AP batholith. (3) Our model of the Bransfield Rift supports its origin as a continental back arc basin that has been significantly affected by continental rifting processes. The rift features significant crustal thinning and the presence of a high-velocity and high-density body in the crust that is interpreted as reflecting widespread underplating. (4) We developed the technique of seismic tomography for the Antarctic region and received new data of the lithosphere structures (5) New results on the influence of mantle diapirs on the development and evolution of the main structures of the Drake Passage and Scotia Sea have been distinguished. (6) New data are confirmed oil and gas potential of Western Antarctica (including UAS Academic Vernadsky area).
