This protection is due to the fact that these surface formations have higher (compared with the base metal) corrosion and electrochemical characteristics. Considering the lack of the systematic literature data on the effect of deposition regimes of the multicomponent condensated coatings on their protective properties, the aim of this study was to determine the specific characteristics of the electrochemical processes taking place at the steel surface with the condensed multi-component coatings and development of the scientifically based recommendations for their use as protective coatings. A variety of research methods has been used (measurement of electrical parameters, methods of electrochemical studies, the measurement of porosity, wear resistance, etc.) and appropriate equipment (vacuum systems and measuring instruments). Based on these experimental data, a model of local corrosion processes in the pores of cathodic coatings on steel was developed, and new data were obtain on the regularities of the electrochemical processes in the pores of cathodic coatings on steel. Interrelation between protective properties of coatings and modes of their deposition has been explained. Physical and chemical properties of the multicomponent condensation coatings on steel have been studied. The classification of the condensation coatings and their short names, taking into account the peculiarities of their application, has been proposed. The current state has been considered of one of the promising areas of the surface modification of metals and alloys, namely, deposition of the condensation coatings based on nitrides. A relatively new class of materials, such as films and multilayer coatings with alternating layers, has been studied. The major challenges were substantiated facing the further development of the deposition methods and application of the condensation coatings.
