Main ways how metallic impurities get into zirconium during magnesium-thermal reduction were determined. Process modes of vacuum separation of reaction mass blocks were investigated, avoiding the process modes that contribute to the increase of metallic impurities. Content of metallic impurities in samples of sponge from bloom part of center and periphery of zirconium sponge blocks was studied by means of chemical and spectral analysis. Results of studies allowed determining optimum solutions on raw material preparation, as well as process of reduction and vacuum separation of reaction mass ensuring minimum losses of raw materials and high efficiency of vacuum separation and quality of zirconium sponge obtained.
