Кондратьев эмпирически доказал наличие долгосрочных колебаний – больших циклов конъюнктуры. Были определены 3 больших цикла конъюнктуры – два полных и один неоконченный: 1-й цикл – с конца XVIII – до середины XIX в.; 2-й цикл – со средины – до конца XIX в.; 3-й цикл – с конца XIX – до середины XX в.
