Purpose. The purpose of this work was to investigate the mechanical properties of composites based on
(Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I solid solutions by the microindentation method.
Methods. Composites based on superionic conductors were prepared by mixing powders (Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I (with a
microcrystal size of 20–50 μm) with ethylene-vinyl acetate in a ratio of 9:1, the mixture of which was subsequently
dried and pressed. The microhardness of the composite samples was measured at room temperature using a PMT-3
microhardness tester using a Vickers indenter. The load force on the indenter was varied in the range of 0.049–1.47 N. The indentation depth of the indenter was 1–10 μm.
Results. The dependences of the microhardness of composites based on (Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I solid solutions on the
indentation depth at room temperature are obtained. It was found that with an increase in the indentation depth, the
microhardness of the composites decreases. The microhardness of composites based on Cu7SiS5I is higher than for
Ag7SiS5I. The maximum changes in microhardness are observed in the region h <3 μm. In the range h = 5 – 15 μm,
the decrease in the microhardness of the composites is rather weak. It was found that with Cu+ ↔ Ag+ substitution,
the change in the microhardness of the composites occurs nonlinearly. The hardness values of composites has the
minimum at x = 0.25. The microhardness of the obtained composites is about 20% - 30% of the microhardness of
crystals of similar chemical composition. The microhardness of the investigated composites is significantly lower (2
times) than the microhardness of (Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I ceramics obtained by solid-phase sintering.
Conclusions. It has been established that the microhardness of composites based on (Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I is significantly
lower than the microhardness of ceramics and crystals of similar chemical compositions. The dependence of the microhardness
of the (Cu1−xAgx)7SiS5I composites in the region of indentation depths h <3 μm rapidly decreases with
increasing depth, which may be due to the indentation size effect during microindentation of microcrystals. The mechanism
of the imprint formation changes at h> 5 μm. It is formed mainly due to the viscoelastic deformation of the
polymer matrix and the mutual displacement of microcrystals in it due to the influence of high mechanical stresses
under the indenter.
