It emerged in the 1970s due to dissatisfaction with formal language approaches prevalent in linguistics and philosophy. Although cognitive linguistics originated from a philosophical perspective, it has since been influenced by various cognitive sciences, particularly cognitive psychology. Charles Fillmore and George Lakoff's work on human categorization in the 1970s and 1980s has been instrumental in cognitive linguistics. Earlier traditions, such as Gestalt psychology, have also contributed to cognitive linguistics, as demonstrated by the work of Leonard Talmy and Ronald Langacker. The neural basis of language and cognition has also played an essential role in shaping cognitive linguistic theories. Early work focused on the constraints of visual biology on color term systems, while more recent work falls under the Neural Theory of Language. In recent years, cognitive linguistic theories have advanced enough to make testable predictions using various converging methods from cognitive sciences. Overall, cognitive linguistics is a complex and sophisticated field that incorporates insights from a broad range of disciplines to understand the nature of human language and cognition [4, p. 48]. Cognitive linguistics can be characterized as a «movement» or an «enterprise» because it lacks a single, tightly-integrated theory. Instead, it is an approach that shares a common set of core commitments and guiding principles, resulting in a wide range of complementary, overlapping (and sometimes competing) theories.
