The rapid integration of neural machine translation (NMT) into professional workflows has reshaped the language services market, with technical domains among the most profoundly affected. This article examines machine translation post-editing (MTPE) as a mandatory competence for technical translators, identifies its core sub-competences, and substantiates the necessity of its systematic integration into translator training curricula. Drawing on a qualitative synthesis of current peer-reviewed literature, the study finds that untrained translators consistently underperform in post-editing tasks, demonstrating poor metacognitive awareness and inadequate error-correction strategies. The results confirm that MTPE must be formalised as an indispensable component of the professional competency profile of technical translators.
